オーダーをお受けする際に、「どんな形があるのですか？」と聞かれることがよくあります。ナンタケットバスケットには多くの形や大きさがあるため、イメージしやすいように、インスタグラムでは実際に使用している雰囲気が伝わる写真をできるだけ多く掲載するよう心がけています。

ナンタケットバスケットには「モールド」と呼ばれる木型があり、その種類は実に豊富です。

例えば、そのまま形を表すものとしてラウンドやオーバル。ほかにも、ウォーウィネット、ビスコッティ、ドッグマギー、タッパーズ、カクテルパースなど、さまざまな名前のモールドがあります。

名前を並べてみるだけでも、どこか物語を感じる響きがあります。

ウォーウィネットはナンタケット島の地名。ビスコッティはイタリアのお菓子。ドッグマギーは作家の愛犬の名前でしょうか。

形の名前には、土地や暮らし、人の記憶が残されています。それもまた、ナンタケットバスケットの魅力のひとつです。

さらに興味深いのは、同じモールドでもインチが変わると印象が大きく変わることです。

アメリカではサイズの単位としてインチが使われています。ほんのわずかなサイズの違いでも、小さなものは愛らしく、少し大きくなるとエレガントに、さらに大きくなると実用的なバスケットとして活躍します。

同じ形なのに、まるで別のバスケットのようにも感じられます。

こうして多くのモールドが生まれてきたのは、それだけ長い時間、バスケットが人々に親しまれ、愛されてきたからなのかもしれません。

では、このモールドという発想はどこから生まれたのでしょうか。

ナンタケット島は、かつて世界有数の捕鯨の拠点でした。捕鯨船では、鯨油を保存するための樽が使われていました。その樽を作る職人は「クーパー」と呼ばれる樽職人です。

樽は、木の板を曲線に組み上げ、鉄の輪で締めて形を整えていきます。そこには、木を扱う高度な技術と、形を整えるための木型の発想がありました。この樽づくりの技術が、ナンタケットバスケットのモールドへとつながったといわれています。

さらにその前には、この島にはバスケットを作る人はおらず、ネイティブアメリカンが作った籠を交易によって入手したり、本土からもたらされたバスケットを使っていたと言われています。

籠は島の暮らしに欠かせない必需品でした。そこに樽職人たちが自らの技術を活かし、バスケットを作り始めたのではないかと想像しています。そして作り手たちは、少しずつ形を変えながら、新しいモールドを生み出してきました。

丸みを少し変える。

高さを変える。

サイズを変える。

その小さな探求の積み重ねが、今日の豊かなバスケットの形につながっています。

モールドを知ることは、ナンタケットバスケットの歴史を辿ることなのかもしれません。

そしてパーティーの場では、その小さな物語がふとした会話のきっかけとなり、バスケットは静かに人と人をつないでくれます。

The Wooden Forms That Shape Nantucket Baskets

When we take orders, we are often asked, “What shapes are available?”

Nantucket baskets come in many shapes and sizes. To make it easier to imagine them, we try to share many photos on Instagram that show how the baskets look when they are actually used.

Nantucket baskets are made with wooden forms called molds. There are many kinds of molds.

Some names describe the shape directly, such as round and oval. Other molds have names such as Wauwinet, Biscotti, Dog Maggie, Tuppers, and Cocktail Purse.

Even just reading the names, you can feel a small story behind them.

Wauwinet is the name of a place on Nantucket Island. Biscotti is an Italian sweet. Dog Maggie may have been the name of a maker’s beloved dog.

The names of the shapes carry traces of places, daily life, and personal memories. This is also part of the charm of Nantucket baskets.

Another interesting point is that the same mold can look very different depending on its size.

In America, inches are used to measure size. Even a small difference in size can change the impression of a basket. A smaller basket feels sweet and charming. A slightly larger one feels elegant. A larger basket becomes more practical for daily use.

Even when the shape is the same, it can feel like a completely different basket.

Perhaps so many molds were created because baskets have been used, loved, and enjoyed by people for a very long time.

So where did the idea of the mold come from?

Nantucket Island was once one of the world’s major centers for whaling. On whaling ships, barrels were used to store whale oil. The craftsmen who made these barrels were called coopers. A barrel is made by shaping curved wooden boards and holding them together with iron hoops. This required a high level of woodworking skill. It also involved the idea of using forms to create a clear shape.

It is said that this barrel-making technique later led to the use of molds in Nantucket basket making.

Before that, it is said that people on the island did not make baskets themselves. They used baskets made by Native Americans through trade, or baskets brought from the mainland.

Baskets were essential tools for island life. I imagine that the coopers began to use their own woodworking skills to make baskets. Over time, makers changed the shapes little by little and created new molds.

Changing the curve.

Changing the height.

Changing the size.

These small explorations built the rich variety of basket shapes we see today.
