スモールパーツの世界 Ⅱ～ハンドルをつなぐ、小さなパーツ
以前のブログでご紹介した「スモールパーツの世界」。
今回はその続編として、ハンドルとバスケットをつなぐ、小さなパーツについてご紹介します。
ナンタケットバスケットのハンドルまわりをよく見てみると、いくつかの小さなパーツが使われています。
外側には、凹凸のある「ノブ」か、丸みのある半円形の「ドーム」を。そして、ハンドルを挟んだ内側には「ワッシャー」をつけます。
どれもほんの小さなパーツですが、形や素材を変えることで、バスケットの表情も少しずつ変わります。
たとえば、リムやハンドルなど、バスケットに使われている木材と同じ素材でそろえると、全体に自然な統一感が生まれます。一方で、エボニーやローズウッドなどの濃い色の木材を選び、アクセントにするのも素敵です。
明るい色のバスケットの中に、ほんの少し深い色が入るだけで、全体の印象が引き締まります。
蓋付きのバスケットなら、トップの飾りとスモールパーツの素材をそろえるのもひとつ。
離れた場所にある小さなパーツ同士がさりげなくつながることで、バスケット全体にまとまりが生まれます。
そして、私が個人的に好きなのは、白いカウボーン。
木のあたたかな色合いの中に白が入ることで、ナンタケットバスケットらしいクラシックな雰囲気が引き立ち、どこか品のある佇まいになるように感じます。
そして、ときには写真のクローバーのような絵柄のあるものを。
ほんの小さなところに遊び心を忍ばせるのも、バスケットづくりの楽しみのひとつです。
よく見なければ気づかないほどの、小さなパーツ。
でも、そんな細部だからこそ、自分らしさを取り入れてみるのも楽しいものです。
バスケットの形を選び、木材を選び、そして小さなパーツを選ぶ。
ひとつひとつは小さな選択ですが、その積み重ねによって、自分だけのバスケットが少しずつ出来上がっていきます。
次にナンタケットバスケットを見るときには、ぜひハンドルの付け根にも目を向けてみてください。
小さなところに、そのバスケットらしさが見つかるかもしれません。

— Small Details That Connect the Handle —
In a previous blog post, we introduced “The World of Small Parts.”
This time, as a continuation of that story, we would like to take a closer look at the small parts that connect the handle to the basket.
If you look closely at the handle area of a Nantucket basket, you will notice several small components.
On the outside, you can choose either a textured knob or a softly rounded dome.On the inside, a washer is placed behind the handle.
They may be very small parts, but changing their shape or material can subtly change the overall character of the basket.
For example, choosing the same wood as the rim or handle creates a natural sense of harmony throughout the basket.
On the other hand, darker woods such as ebony or rosewood can be used as an accent.
Even a small touch of a deeper color can give a light-colored basket a more defined and refined appearance.
For a basket with a lid, matching the small parts with the material used for the top ornament is another lovely option.
When these small details echo one another, they quietly bring a sense of unity to the whole basket.
Personally, I especially like white cow bone.
Against the warm tones of the wood, the white adds a classic Nantucket basket feel and gives the basket an elegant, refined presence.
And sometimes, a small painted detail, like the clover shown in the photo, can be a lovely choice.
Adding a little playfulness in such a tiny detail is one of the pleasures of creating a basket.
These are small parts that may go unnoticed at first glance.
But perhaps that is exactly why they are such a lovely place to express your own style.
Choosing the shape of the basket, choosing the wood, and then choosing the small parts.
Each choice may seem small, but together they gradually create a basket that feels uniquely your own.
The next time you look at a Nantucket basket, take a moment to notice the base of the handle.
You may find a small detail that gives the basket its own character.
